What do you think of my list of buys for January?

  1. Great buys. I really like your MSFT, MDC, and UL buys. Apparently Starbucks will start selling wine and beer in certain Canadian stores. That might get interesting when it comes to their revenue.

    1. Tawcan,
I am hoping to keep adding to SBUX throughout the year. It would be great to see them dip a little but I don't see that happening because they have outstanding earnings each quarter. That is part of the reason why I buy little amounts every so often. I can't wait to see how they do with selling wine and beer. I think that could spell more buying opportunities for me. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Great buys, DM. MSFT has been one of the worst performer in the DJIA, so its a good one to buy. What are your thoughts on their strategy for Win 10? They are giving it away for free as upgrades to Win 7 and 8...and licensing is their biggest revenue segment.

Really like your other buys too. Wish I had no commissions for my purchases...i'd keep buying small amounts like you.

    1. R2R,
I am glad you brought up the fact the MS will be giving out the WIN 10 upgrade. The company I work for is highly reliant on MS products and we are a MS partner. I think part of the reason they are handing people the free upgrade is WIN 8 was a disaster. They are also releasing a new Office suite, CRM, etc. Many companies are highly reliant on MS products and are always willing to upgrade to keep up with technology. We happen to be one of those companies. I don't think it will hurt their revenue because they got all these other products coming out as well. I am definitely going to take advantage of the cheaper share price! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Looks like UL and YUM are my favorite buys for the month though my first pick would be VFC but not at current valuations. I have owned that one for a long time but have not added to that position in a while. We'll see if a strong dollar affects sales overseas for many VFC brands. Thanks for sharing.

    1. DivHut,
You brought up a great point. VFC is a little pricey right now, which is why I never buy in large amounts. I am hoping they have a terrible earnings so I can take advantage of buying in bigger amounts. This is definitely in my top 5 favorite companies in my portfolio and many people here in New England buy their clothes. I happen to be one of those people who love Timberland, North Face, and Nautica.

  4. Nice purchases, I recently purchased UL as well. I also have my eye on YUM.

    1. CD,
I was hoping to see YUM come back down to the $69 price range. I should have pulled the trigger at $70 back in January but I ended up buying something else. The long term growth looks good for YUM and I am sure the will be increasing dividends for many years to come. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Hard to argue about any of those buys. PEP might have been a little pricey, but it's a solid stock and you went light on it.

    1. DWC,
PEP is one of those stocks that I am going to wish I added to when it was in the $90 price range back in October 2014. I am pretty much using the same strategy for SBUX and PEP where I am sneaking in little amounts. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Some good purchases Mongrel! You and I picked up a couple of similar companies over the past month. Building, building, building. Each buy adds to your overall income producing machine!

    1. W2R,
Thank you very much. Happy belated b-day. I hope you enjoyed your day. Even though I still have a ton of building to do, the progress has been great. One year has made a huge impact and I feel like we have created a solid foundation so far. I took a quick look at your portfolio and saw that you have a solid 50K already invested. Congrats to you! Keep it up!

  7. Great going. Keep it up. Look at AAPL, STOR, NKE and WMT. That would be nice to add $10ers to.

    1. Anonymous,
I have been watching NKE for a while now and I am waiting to see of they will come down a little more. They have a solid balance sheet. I have also looked at STOR as a possible acquisition. Do you know if they will be paying monthly dividends?

    2. Store pays .25 per quarter. I got my first dividend last month.

    3. Anonymous,
Thank you for the update. I will have to look at Store a little further. I am wondering if now is a good time to add REIT's or if I should wait to see what the year brings with the interest rate hikes.

  8. Nice buys Divident Mongrel...You have some great household names there. We only own MCD from the list above but hope to become a fellow shareholder in several more. :)

Way to keep adding to that passive income stream! Keep up the great work. AFFJ

    1. AFFJ,
Thank you for stopping by! I am glad we are fellow shareholders of MCD. I think we might have some other companies in common that are not listed. I wanted to add a little more to MCD before the Ex-dividend date.

  9. Hard to argue with any of those companies! PEP and VFC are a little expensive, but both are fantastic.

In regards to STOR (mentioned in an above comment, I think), they are paying quarterly dividends.

    1. Seraph,
Thank you for clarifying that STOR pays quarterly dividends. I am not a huge fan of buying newer companies, but they look very interesting. I will have to do a little more research on this one. Is this a company you would add to your portfolio? Thanks for stopping by!

    1. A-G,
SBUX has been preforming very well and I wish I had a much larger position here. I feel like I have missed the boat here, but we will see what happens. It will certainly be interesting to see them serve liquor in Canada!

  11. Nice purchases. I would definitely like to buy SBUX sometime. I like MSFT too, but not too sure yet and also the weight in my tech sector is very high right now. So will probably hold off until it balances out.

  12. DGJ,
I wish I would have bought more SBUX a few months ago because they have been on a tear as of late. MSFT seems fairly priced at the moment, but I suspect the price wont stay this low for long. MSFT has a ton of new products being launched. I do like APPL the most as far as technology goes.
