October 2014 Loyal3 Gains and Losses

On a monthly basis I will be keeping track of the gains and losses for the Loyal3 portfolio. This will help keep track of how well that portfolio is doing on a monthly basis. I can also see which stocks I could dollar cost average into for the future. The Credit Card total is included because this is how much free cash I have received just by making all the purchases. The Dividends total includes the year to date dividends that I have received.

Portfolio Winner of the Month - DR. Pepper and Snapple Group (DPS)

Portfolio Loser of the Month - Mattel (MAT)

*My goal for November is to dollar cost average into Mattel and Viacom so that I can buy up more shares at a lower price.

  1. Just to clarify, these aren't realized gains, but are just changes in the stock price, correct? Whereas the credit card rewards and the dividends are actual realized income. So as a means of determining value, you will be comparing existing cost basis to current fair market value?

  2. Hey W2R,
I apologize because I should have been a little more clear. The total without dividends is just the gains from the stock price. Then I totaled my gains with the dividends. And finally I added CC Rewards to the equation. So technically speaking my market value would be the $7347.28 with a cost basis of $7295. This is because I reinvest the dividends. With the CC Cash back rewards I use that to pay off the balance of the credit card from all these purchases. The reason I wanted to add the CC rewards is because that money is actually paying off the stock purchases I made. But this is not part of my market value. So to reiterate the real market value is $7347.28 as of OCT 31 2014. Thanks for pointing that out.

  3. I assume your Loyal3 account is meant for long term investment and you don't plan to sell. If that's the case it makes very little sense to look at the gains and losses. I suppose looking at the numbers will tell you how well you're doing compared to the overall market.

  4. Tawcan,
I do like to see how my portfolio is doing compared to the S and P, DOW, Bonds, and Foreign markets. The portfolio will be for the long term so I am not too concerned with the gains and losses for the month. However I am able to see which stocks I can dollar cost average into. I can also track the best and worst performers which is always good.

    1. I am expecting the cc rewards to be taken away but I have not seen any articles relating to it. Did you read this in an article somewhere?

    2. I just found out about the dismissal off cc usage. That puts a damper on my day. I guess all good things must come to an end.

  6. Thanks for sharing your recent gains and losses from your L3 account. While it's great to track these figures I think the focus should be more on the dividend growth and dividends received. Your portfolio will see tremendous price fluctuations and may even see red from top to bottom. The question is will you sell anything or average down on your positions?

    2. Divhut,
I am not too concerned with any bumps in the road because that is to be expected for the long term investor. I am more focused on dollar cost averaging into companies that have experienced a loss. I am going to take advantage of buying MAT VIAB and UL in order to get a lower cost basis. I dont see myself selling anything at this time. These companies seem pretty solid core investments and I hope to see some more gains for years to come.
