Recent Buys DNKN, UL, APPL, DIS, WMT, and MCD

Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, NJ
After a much need vacation to South Jersey, I am now back to my normal life. It’s always hard to come back to reality after a fun and adventurous vacation. One or two vacations a year is what I am limited to. I am grateful to have experienced what life should be like on my last adventure. The reality is I basically have to buy my freedom. How much does freedom cost? I am unsure of the dollar amount but a good estimate would be between $600,000 and $800,000. I can invest that money into real estate, stocks, and CD’s. This would allow me to live off of the passive income from my investments.

I’m never going to hit the lottery because I never play so I have to suck up my pride and continue working for that freedom. I am not looking to be rich. I just want to be free to do what I want. If I want to go hiking in New Hampshire or Vermont; I don’t want to have to worry about when I have to get back home in order to be at work the next day. “Live free or Die” is the New Hampshire slogan. I wish I could pack my things and just drive along the beautiful Kancagmagus highway. I am tied to a ball and chain and can’t break free. That’s how I feel pretty much every day. Although the thought of packing a suit case with whatever I need seems appealing; I would only have the funds to live free for a comfortable 20 months. What an amazing 20 months that would be!

I have been consistently adding to my portfolio on a weekly basis. This week I decided to buy into 6 great companies that I feel will continue to produce solid dividends in the future.

Dunkin Donuts (DNKN)
$50
$44.15
UNILEVER (UL)

$42.18

DISNEY (DIS)

$89.12
Wal-Mart (WMT)

McDonalds (MCD)

What are you buying this week? Are you a fellow shareholder of the companies I mentioned above?

  1. That statement resonated with me: "The reality is I basically have to buy my freedom". Very well put! Sad as it is, that is the reality and every person has to go through it.

Some great companies that you added to your portfolio. Although Im not a holder in any of those stocks, I would love to own some of them. I am concentrating on rebuilding my cash position currently - so, no buys for me as of yet. Will be looking to buy more at the end of the year.

    cheers

  2. Hey R2R,
I was thinking of building my cash reserves as well in order to buy an investment property next year. I am earning .095% interest at my current bank which isn't as bad compared to most banks. I am hoping I can keep investing on a weekly basis in order to gain freedom a lot quicker. The market seems to be dipping a little this week so I am going to take advantage of the cheaper prices. Winning the lottery seems like an impossibility, so I will keep throwing money into whatever investments are earning decent returns. Good luck on your investments!

  3. Nice batch of buys here which should further your progress in buying that freedom. Not that it matters, but I believe you chart showing the buys might be a touch off (MCD doesn't have a purchase price of $35). Weekly purchases of $400 will absolutely snowball quickly and create a heck of dividend stream.

  4. Hey W2R,
Thanks for stopping by. I just fixed that error and MCD won't be selling at $35 anytime soon. Lol. I am hoping to keep adding $300-$400 on a weekly basis in order to get that snowball going quicker.

  5. Mongrel,
I though about accumulating DNKN in my Loyal3 account but passed. I did start a DIS DCA and I already own AAPL. While I like the donuts (a lot), I just wasn't convinced it was a safe bet long-term. I also like UL, but buying PG and CLX at the moment. I know WMT and MCD are both great stocks, I'm not thrilled about the shopping experience at either, so for now I'm holding off and I've bought TGT instead. Keep it up!

  6. Hey RBD,
DNKN is one of my speculative stocks because it is very popular here in New England. The lines are always long compared to any of the other food chains. Even when there were 8 other food chains to pick from on our last stop in Connecticut it seems like the only busy place was Dunkin Donuts. Even McDonalds only had a few people in line. And you can probably guess where my spouse and I spent our money. We love the food and coffee but I know that this is just a personal favorite and more of a risky pick compared to some of my other buys. All of the other stocks are long term picks, but I am also hoping that DNKN will also be a long term pick as well. Only time will tell. Thanks for stopping by!

  7. Hi DM,

I use Loyal3 as well from time to time. However, aren't you afraid that the valuations you are buying into on some of those companies are a little high?

Good luck in your dividend investing journey!

  8. Hey DGI,
The valuation for DIS and DNKN is a little high. DNKN is more of a personal favorite of mine. I don't mind paying a little higher for DIS because they have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming years. I love the Star Wars and Marvel movies so I think DIS will keep going higher from here. It amazes me how many people I see in the Dunkin Donuts drive thru. This is on a daily basis at all times of the day. I am not too scared of these two getting a 20% or more correction because I am not heavily invested into them at the moment. With Loyal 3 I am able to DCA into them in the upcoming months and years. Hopefully I am right and they continue to pay dividends for years to come. Thanks for your insight and good luck as well.

  9. DM,

Really good diversification among your buys. Keep doing what you are doing and definitely avoid the lotto tickets! :-)

    1. MDP,
I think one of the best things about Loyal3 is that your able to diversify with little purchases. The credit card rewards are also a huge bonus. I can't wait to see what things will look like in a year from now. I am hoping the dividend checks will keep coming in each month in order to cover my expenses. Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Nice purchases DM. I already hold MCD and AAPL. DIS is a stock that I am looking at to initiate position in. I just recently initiated positions in KO, PEP, V and AFL through my sharebuilder weekly purchase plan and I plan to DCA these positions over the next weeks/months. Looking forward to stocks like DIS and WMT too to add my list.

    1. Hey DGJ,
Those are some really nice buys as well. I don't own AFL or V at the moment but I do have them on my watch list. I am planning to restructure one of my portfolios a bit so I may add one of those to my recent buys. Good luck with your investments and I look forward to seeing what your next purchases will be.

    1. I was spending $1/week on lottery for a couple of months but I quickly gave that up when I couldn't even match a single number. lol. I am just not that lucky.

  12. Mongrel,

Like the consistent purchases. $400/week is a very good chunk of change to put to work every week, and will surely get that snowball rolling.

Those are some excellent companies up there. I hope to join you as a shareholder in some of them at some point.

    Best regards!

    1. Hey DM,
I am surprised how quickly the dividends are starting to roll in. September is going to be a nice month and I can't wait to add up all the totals. Although I spent a bit while I was on vacation, the dividends will help to offset the expenses a little. I have been using the dividends to buy more shares of quality companies, but I could have easily used it to pay off my phone bill. Thanks for the support and I can't wait to see what your September passive income looks like.

  13. Dividend Mongrel,

Congrats on the weekly purchases. They're going to buy you a permanent vacation before you know it. Great job sticking to the plan and wishing you continued success!

    1. Hey Ryan,
I am hoping that dream will come true someday. Now that I am back from vacation, I am motivated to keep putting money back to work for me. A permanent vacation before the age of 55 seems reasonable if I stay consistent. Thanks for the support!

  14. I like your choices! Honestly, I don't think I've ever considered DNKN at all. Definitely need to check it out now!

    1. Hey DD,
DNKN has the potential for some long term growth. They are no where near Starbucks but when you can get a great cup of coffee and food for under $4, it's no wonder why "America Runs on Dunkin".
